If you are good at SEO/SEM you can earn HUGE amount of money, no matter where do you live. Some clients pay several hundreds and even thousands dollars for an ongoing SEO/SEM projects.
Even if you are not selling your services to others, you can work for yourself and still earn huge amount of money from advertising.

In the UK this can vary quite dramatically dependent on how you use them, and who you work for.
To attatch yourself to an agency in a junior role, you are looking at a salary of as little as £14k. In a more senior position, with extra responsibilities this could rise to well over £35-40k.

Your value is essentially what you are able to get some one to pay you for your skills, which can vary greatly from person to person.
However, typically working in search engine markeitng pays rather well. In the United States many entry level search engine marketing positions start at aound $25,000 per year, and the sky is the limit for how much you can potentially make. Many corporations now have Vice Presidents of search engine marketing that are probably making hundreds of thousands of dollars.
